To the Top, Never Never Stop

Hey all,
So today was another beautiful day in the neighbourhood of London and we started off our adventures at the Museum of London, then went to St. Paul's, then I had bus adventures, free pizza, and finished the night off with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory play.

MUSEUM OF LONDON

Love museums, they appeal to the history major within me. Also it was chronologically ordered which appeals to the timeline fiend within me. Some highlights of the museum were videos on The Great Fire of 1666 (which destroyed 4/5 of London housing in 5 days) and a video montage of clips from the film archives from the early 1900s to the 1940s.

Pictures are of me with a world clock depicting some eight additional times around the world and a WWII propaganda poster because I like propaganda posters.

SAINT PAUL'S CATHEDRAL

Headed over to St. Paul's, which is a huge and magnificent creation of Sir Christopher Wren, who built it on a very limited budget after the Great Fire of 1666 burned down the original church. And he built it in 35 years. A very talented gentleman, to say the least.

Today's focus. Buildings.
Took this  at an angle and the brightness
 helps make it stand out.
While I was not able to take any photos of the inside (the Church is still a place of worship) the tour guide was able to share some wonderful stories with us.

88 Floating Steps (Geometric spiral staircase): Built with Wren's mathematician skills, this staircase appears as if it were floating and as such has been used in several films/TV shows, including Sherlock and Harry Potter!

The domes of the church that Wren built/designed he kept a secret because everyone assumed he would build steeples and he let them assume that because he did not want to be told no, basically.

There are some ancient flags hanging around the church, including some banners hanging by the Duke of Wellington's grave/memorial chamber. These banners were actually made by women prisoners during the time period in order for them to learn a trade.

While the church no longer buries bodies, it does take ashes of notable people, such as Alexander Fleming (discoverer of penicillin).

King Henry VIII was best buds with the Cardinal Wosely and gave him awesome gifts (mansion, house, boat, etc...). However, when the Cardinal could not manage to get the pope to grant Henry a divorce, Henry unfriended him. Henry took back a lot of his gifts, one of which was the sarcophagus that had been designed for the Cardinal's eventual demise. He took the sarcophagus changed a few details and used it for Lord Nelson instead. (Unfriending was harsher back then).

TO THE TOP, NEVER NEVER STOP

Also, the chruch has a lot
of steps.

Like a lot.

A lot, a lot.

And I climbed them all.

The view was worth it.

ADVENTURE TIME

Shoutout to the parents.
Just because.
After hanging around in the gift shop forever (I have a love of gift shops) and watching some of the orchestra concert that was going on in the church I headed over to the bus stops and used all of my knowledge (and a bus map and the tube map) to locate which bus to take me closest to the student appartments.

I did get pretty close, I am happy to say. Got off about a fifteen minute walk away and just wandered about in shops and stuff until heading back to the study center for Free
Pizza Tuesday, which was awesome.

CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

While eating pizza, several of us decided to go and see the play Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We attempted to figure out the buses again, but a gentleman told it it was only a five minute walk away This was a lie, because brisk walk when you know where you are going is totally different than clueless bumbling. More on this with Oliver Twist walk later. But we finally figured it out and got there.

The venue was so fancy and the play was fabulous. Those kids are so darn talented, it was just amazing. Engaging and entertaining. Can't wait to see Antony and Cleopatra with the whole group in a couple weeks~

Tomorrow is Oxford. Look out for it. I might be giving out gold stars or Friendship Points (FP).
